People of ALL Abilities are invited to Rock Wall Climb, Water-ski and much more at SportsAbility

Ocala / Gainesville, FL (October 2-3, 2015) – It may take some adaptive equipment and a bit of courage, but people with disabilities will be enjoying rock climbing, sit water-skiing, horseback riding, SCUBA and numerous other fitness and wellness activities at Florida Disabled Outdoors Association’s (FDOA) 7th Annual SportsAbility Ocala / Gainesville on October 2-3, 2015. The SportsAbility program shows people of all abilities what is possible and how everyone may recreate together.


Florida Disabled Outdoors Association invites people of ALL abilities to attend this festival of inclusive leisure time physical activity at no charge. “Pursuing recreation with family and friends makes it more fun and therefore more likely for us to continue,” stated Laurie LoRe-Gussak, Florida Disabled Outdoors Association Executive Director, “and the more we pursue physical activity, the healthier we become.” SportsAbility shows people with disabilities what they CAN do. People are motivated to be active by different types of recreation; for this reason, SportsAbility provides the opportunity for people to try over 25 different active leisure pursuits during this two-day program.

October 2nd - DAY ONE -
On Friday, activities will be held at the Ed Croskey Center, Hampton Aquatic Center at MLK Recreation Complex, 1510 NW 4th Street, Ocala, FL from 10:00 am – 2:30 pm. Activities include: horseback riding, adaptive golf and tennis, basketball, fishing simulator, SCUBA, shooting sports, arts and crafts and more. Participants will also have the opportunity to attend the SportsAbility Resource Expo with the latest information on products, services and programs addressing leisure recreation, health, assistive technologies and other disabilities’ interests.

October 3rd – DAY TWO -
On Saturday, activities will be held at Paynes Prairie State Park located at 100 Savannah Blvd., Micanopy, FL at no charge from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Participants can try many accessible and inclusive recreational activities such as: sit water skiing, sailing, nature trail rides, pontoon boats rides, paddle sports, horseback riding, rock wall climbing, shooting sports and much more. “Florida’s state parks are proud to provide nature-based outdoor recreation for all visitors,” said Donald Forgione, director of the Florida Park Service. “We welcome the Florida Disabled Outdoors Association to Paynes Prairie Preserve to offer these fun activities.”

“Secondary health issues arise from a sedentary lifestyle. Adults with disabilities are 3 times more likely to have heart disease, stroke, diabetes, or cancer than adults without disabilities. For this reason, SportsAbility lets people try different ways to get active to be healthier, happier and more productive,” stated David Jones, FDOA President.

University of Florida MiCaRT Center 2nd Annual Cancer Research Symposium (Oct 22 @LN, Orlando)

The Florida Minority Cancer Research and Training (MiCaRT) Center will host its 2nd Annual Cancer Research Symposium on Thursday, October 22 at the UF Lake Nona campus. The 2015 Symposium will highlight Breast Cancer Research activities in Florida, including poster presentations, lunch & learn, advocates networking, scientists-advocates networking, etc. 

Keynote presentation will be given by Dr. Jonathan D. Licht, the UF Health Cancer Center Director.

Additionally, Robin will address beliefs about breast cancer among Latinas, barriers to information and screenings, and challenges of care for this community, culturally relevant education, and outreach.

I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer on May 16, 2012. Since then it has been my passion to help others fighting breast cancer. I am on the board of Power of 2, a non-profit which raises money for Treatment Resistant Breast Cancer Research at UF Cancer & Genetics. In just 3 years our organization has been able to provide the researchers with $48,000 in seed grants.

Susan G. Komen South Florida RFA Announcement for 2016-2017

Susan G. Komen® South Florida is proud to announce the release of its RFA (Request

for Application) for services to be provided fiscal year 04/01/2016 to 03/31/2017. Two

separate application releases are being issued – one in the area of Patient Care, and the

other in the area of Breast Health Navigation/Education. Applications for breast cancer

and breast health programs from nonprofit organizations, governmental agencies and

educational institutions in Palm Beach, Martin and St. Lucie counties are eligible for

grant funding.

The promise of Komen South Florida is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by

empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the

cures. The organization runs one of the most innovative, responsive grant programs in

breast cancer today. Komen South Florida is proud to have funded over $ 500,000 to

local community programs in 2015/2016 that support breast cancer screening and

treatment programs, as well as education and outreach for the medically underserved in

Palm Beach, Martin and St. Lucie counties.

Our grant cycle runs from 04/01/2016 through 03/31/2017. Applications from eligible

entities must be submitted online through the Grants e-Management systems (GeMS):
