Accelerating HPV Vaccine Uptake: What is Working and Why

Human papillomaviruses (HPV) cause most cases of cervical cancer and large proportions of vaginal, vulvar, anal, penile, and oropharyngeal cancers. HPV vaccines could dramatically reduce the incidence of HPV-associated cancers and other conditions among both females and males, but the uptake of vaccines has fallen short of target levels. The September NCI Research to Reality cyber-seminar will present key goals and high priority research interventions to increase HPV vaccine uptake. We also will highlight promising interventions that through a variety of strategies have created substantive changes in accelerating HPV vaccine uptake.

The Cancer Health Disparities Program of the University  of Florida Health Cancer Center is proud to partner with the Florida Department of Health, Alachua County, to celebrate “Take a Loved One to the Doctor Month”.

The Florida Department of Health Presents - The Cancer Free Florida Webinar Series: Exploring the Connection between Overweight, Obesity and Cancer

Overview

Research has confirmed that being overweight or obese increases the risk for certain cancers. Dr. Tanya Agurs-Collins will provide information about the factors involved with increased cancer risk and overweight and obesity including: the effect of hormones, insulin, metabolic syndrome, and inflammation. She will also provide a review of the biological factors influenced by various dietary choices. Dr. Catherine Howard will share lessons learned from the first year of Florida's Healthiest Weight initiative.

Learning objectives:

• Identify which cancers are associated with overweight and obesity
• Understand the biological mechanisms associated with obesity and increased cancer risk
• Understand the relationship between diet and cancer risk
• Describe the Healthiest Weight Florida initiative
• List the five key strategies of Healthiest Weight Florida
• Identify ways that the Healthiest Weight Florida initiative can support an organization's physical activity and nutrition messages and interventions

Kids Together Against Cancer Workshops

This organization is located out of Jacksonville, FL.

KTAC offers a five week workshop four times a year during the evening. Programs are help at the Neviaser Educational Building and include dinner for children and families. Each week children ages 5 to 17 attend a session focusing on a specific topic. Art educators and clinical social workers help the children complete a project that promotes discussion of emotions and feelings. The activities are fun and interactive. Adults meet separately in a group led by a clinical social worker where they learn how to effectively communicate with their children. 

These workshops are free and open to anyone in the community that needs our services.

Third Annual Pink Pumpkin Pedal-Off to Benefit Breast Cancer Research at UF

The third annual Pink Pumpkin Pedal-Off will take place on October 4th at UF Health's Cancer & Genetics Research Complex, at the corner of Archer Road and Gale Lemerand Drive. 

To put on a successful bicycling event like this, we need: 

1. volunteers, able to help either before and/or on the day of the Pedal-Off, in these areas: on-site registration, supply pick-up, 3 rest stop crews, "goody bag" stuffing, food service (pre-ride breakfast and post-ride lunch; lunch provided by Chuy's Tex-Mex restaurant), distribution of "PPP" postcards and fliers to local businesses, medical offices, schools, etc.

2. sponsors: very important! Donations of cash from businesses and individuals help defray the cost of putting on the Pedal-Off, making a larger donation possible

3. recruiters: help us find volunteers among your friends, family members, and co-workers

4. cyclists: sign up to ride one of three possible distances at www.pinkpumpkinpedaloff.org or www.gccfla.org/pppo (with links on facebook)

5. for you to forward this email to friends, family members, and co-workers.....and anyone who has lost a loved one to breast cancer
