Cancer Prevention and Worksite Health Promotion: Time to Join Forces

An essay titled, “Cancer Prevention and Worksite Health Promotion: Time to Join Forces” was published today in Preventing Chronic Disease: www.cdc.gov/pcd/issues/2014/14_0127.htm

Ideas presented in the essay stem from discussions held during the Cancer prevention across the lifespan (CPAL)-hosted meeting on “Opportunities for Cancer Prevention in the Workplace” (held July 2013). The essay draws attention to a wide variety of available CDC resources on workplace health promotion and protection and provides ideas for new efforts to advance primary cancer prevention among working adults.

The essay was written by the Cancer Prevention in the Workplace Writing Group, which includes individuals from across our Center, as well as individuals from NIOSH, CDC’s Worklife Wellness Office, CDC’s Community Guide Branch, Emory University, and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Effects of the Affordable Care Act Among Cancer Survivors: Expanded Insurance Options and Other Potential Impacts

July 24, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. ET

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) represents the most dramatic expansion of health insurance for vulnerable Americans since implementation of the Medicaid and Medicare programs in the 1960s. The legislation and accompanying regulations are complex, as they are designed to address a variety of gaps in coverage while working within existing structures for providing health insurance.  Some aspects of the ACA are specifically designed to address barriers to coverage for individuals with health problems such as cancer that may keep them out of the labor force or otherwise limit access to private insurance. This session will provide an overview of key components of the ACA and how they provide expanded insurance options for cancer survivors, as well as other potential impacts on out-of-pocket burdens, access to specialty providers and therapies, and enrollment in clinical trials. Register today.

Tools and Policies to Prevent Skin Cancer Through Reduction of UV Exposure

Tuesday, July 22, 2014, 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. EDT

Join us as we explore the important cancer control issue of ultraviolet (UV) exposure and skin cancer prevention. This session will highlight recent research and resources designed to better identify levels of UV exposure and how one state built upon a strong educational program to a policy and systems approach to address sun safety.

Exposure to UV radiation has long been recognized as the most important environmental risk factor for melanoma; exposures in early childhood may be most important and there is evidence that cumulative UV exposure and the time spent outdoors may increase melanoma risk. Dr. Zaria Tatalovich, with NCI’S Surveillance Research Program, will discuss how the
County Level UV Exposure Data for the Continental United States dataset can help predict potential exposure at local levels.

We are excited to pair Dr. Tatalovich’s presentation with efforts coming from the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) who implemented a robust sun safety intervention in a variety of settings that formed the basis for an extensive, multi-level effort around skin cancer prevention. Beth Pinkerton, in the NMDOH Cancer Control Program, will provide an overview of interventions in New Mexico, discuss the evolving emphasis on policy within the current projects on sun safety, and discuss the New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Control Program outcomes, lessons learned, and applicability in other communities.

As always, part of the webinar will be dedicated to your questions. We look forward to you engaging with the presenters, and sharing your own experiences.

Speakers:

Zaria Tatalovich, Ph.D.
Acting Chief, Surveillance Systems
Branch Surveillance Research
Program Division of Cancer Control
and Population Sciences, NCI

Beth Pinkerton
Manager –
Comprehensive Cancer Program
New Mexico Department of Health
