Tools and Policies to Prevent Skin Cancer Through Reduction of UV Exposure

Join us as we explore the important cancer control issue of ultraviolet (UV) exposure and skin cancer prevention. This session will highlight recent research and resources designed to better identify levels of UV exposure and how one state built upon a strong educational program to a policy and systems approach to address sun safety.  

Exposure to UV radiation has long been recognized as the most important environmental risk factor for melanoma; exposures in early childhood may be most important and there is evidence that cumulative UV exposure and the time spent outdoors may increase melanoma risk. Dr. Zaria Tatalovich, with NCI’S Surveillance Research Program, will discuss how the County Level UV Exposure Data for the Continental United States dataset can help predict potential exposure at local levels.

We are excited to pair Dr. Tatalovich’s presentation with efforts coming from the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) who implemented a robust sun safety intervention in a variety of settings that formed the basis for an extensive, multi-level effort around skin cancer prevention. Beth Pinkerton, in the NMDOH Cancer Control Program, will provide an overview of interventions in New Mexico, discuss the evolving emphasis on policy within the current projects on sun safety, and discuss the New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Control Program outcomes, lessons learned, and applicability in other communities.
