New York Times: Rise in Early Cervical Cancer Detection Is Linked to Affordable Care Act
Story found at: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/11/25/health/rise-in-early-cervical-cancer-detection-is-linked-to-affordable-care-act.html
WASHINGTON — Cancer researchers say there has been a substantial increase in women under the age of 26 who have received a diagnosis of early-stagecervical cancer, a pattern that they say is most likely an effect of the Affordable Care Act.
Starting in 2010, a provision of the health law allowed dependents to stay on their parents’ health insurance until age 26. The number of uninsured young adults fell substantially in the years that followed. The share of 19- to 25-year-olds without health insurance declined to 21 percent in the first quarter of 2014 from 34 percent in 2010 — a decrease of about four million people, federal data show.
Researchers from the American Cancer Society wanted to examine whether the expansion of health insurance among young American women was leading to more early-stage diagnoses. Early diagnosis improves the prospects for survival because treatment is more effective and the chance of remission is higher. It also bolsters women’s chances for preserving their fertility during treatment. And women with health insurance are far more likely to get a screening that can identify cancer early.
Researchers used the National Cancer Data Base, a hospital-based registry of about 70 percent of all cancer cases in the United States. They compared diagnoses for women ages 21 to 25 who had cervical cancer with those for women ages 26 to 34, before and after the health law provision began in 2010. Early-stage diagnoses rose substantially among the younger group — the one covered by the law — and stayed flat among the older group.
About 79 percent of the younger group had an early-stage diagnosis in 2011-12, up from about 71 percent in 2007-09. For the older group, the percentage dropped to 71 percent from 73 percent, a change that is not statistically meaningful.
The study was not aimed at proving that the change was a direct result of the law. But the size of the database, and the fact that the share of young women with health insurance had increased so substantially, led researchers to conclude that the law was having an effect. (Pap tests are a part of most routine medical checkups for young women.)
“It’s a very remarkable finding, actually,” said Dr. Ahmedin Jemal, one of the researchers. “You see the effect of the A.C.A. on the cancer outcomes.”
The effect for younger women looked even stronger when analyzed by year. About 84 percent of the younger group had early-stage diagnoses in 2011, compared with 68 percent in 2009. Early-stage diagnoses dropped to 72 percent of the group in 2012, a drop that Dr. Jemal said was typical during increases in screenings, because many of the early-stage cases have already been detected.
For several years, researchers have been trying to test whether the law is working to improve health, but isolating its effects has been tricky. A study this spring found that the number of newdiabetes cases identified among poor Americans had surged in states that embraced the Affordable Care Act, but not in states that had not.
Since November 2009, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has recommended that cervical cancer screening begin at age 21, the only cancer screening recommendation for that age group. Dr. Jemal said that change made it impossible to compare the total number of women who got screened before and after the health care law came into effect.

The Cancer Free Florida Webinar Series: Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities in Access to Genetic Risk Assessment Services for Hereditary Breast Cancer
The Florida Department of Health Presents
The Cancer Free Florida Webinar Series
Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities in Access to Genetic
Risk Assessment Services for Hereditary Breast Cancer
Overview
Breast cancer is the most common and second leading cause of
cancer deaths among women in Florida, with a total of 43,090 women new cases
and 8,346 mortalities between 2011 and 2013.1 Genetic testing has helped to
reduce the burden of breast cancer, allowing more targeted treatment and
preventative care to stop the disease before it forms. Testing is widely
available now and can impact management, surveillance, and potential
prophylactic options for persons affected. Recent research highlights unique
health disparities with genetic risk as well as access to genetic testing and care
within certain populations and emphasizing the need for more education and
outreach.
Learning objectives
• Describe
several features that are associated with hereditary breast cancer
• Understand
the significance of identifying hereditary breast cancer and opportunities to
prevent future cancers
• Recognize
racial and ethnic disparities in access to hereditary cancer testing and uptake
of cancer risk reducing options among young breast cancer survivors in Florida
• Explain
some common barriers to accessing genetic services and potential ways to
overcome these barriers
Intended Audience: Health Care Providers, Health Care
Educators and Navigators, Researchers, Health Care Administrators and
Interested Stakeholders

People of ALL Abilities are invited to Rock Wall Climb, Water-ski and much more at SportsAbility
Ocala / Gainesville, FL (October 2-3, 2015) – It may take some adaptive equipment and a bit of courage, but people with disabilities will be enjoying rock climbing, sit water-skiing, horseback riding, SCUBA and numerous other fitness and wellness activities at Florida Disabled Outdoors Association’s (FDOA) 7th Annual SportsAbility Ocala / Gainesville on October 2-3, 2015. The SportsAbility program shows people of all abilities what is possible and how everyone may recreate together.
Florida Disabled Outdoors Association invites people of ALL abilities to attend this festival of inclusive leisure time physical activity at no charge. “Pursuing recreation with family and friends makes it more fun and therefore more likely for us to continue,” stated Laurie LoRe-Gussak, Florida Disabled Outdoors Association Executive Director, “and the more we pursue physical activity, the healthier we become.” SportsAbility shows people with disabilities what they CAN do. People are motivated to be active by different types of recreation; for this reason, SportsAbility provides the opportunity for people to try over 25 different active leisure pursuits during this two-day program.
October 2nd - DAY ONE -
On Friday, activities will be held at the Ed Croskey Center, Hampton Aquatic Center at MLK Recreation Complex, 1510 NW 4th Street, Ocala, FL from 10:00 am – 2:30 pm. Activities include: horseback riding, adaptive golf and tennis, basketball, fishing simulator, SCUBA, shooting sports, arts and crafts and more. Participants will also have the opportunity to attend the SportsAbility Resource Expo with the latest information on products, services and programs addressing leisure recreation, health, assistive technologies and other disabilities’ interests.
October 3rd – DAY TWO -
On Saturday, activities will be held at Paynes Prairie State Park located at 100 Savannah Blvd., Micanopy, FL at no charge from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Participants can try many accessible and inclusive recreational activities such as: sit water skiing, sailing, nature trail rides, pontoon boats rides, paddle sports, horseback riding, rock wall climbing, shooting sports and much more. “Florida’s state parks are proud to provide nature-based outdoor recreation for all visitors,” said Donald Forgione, director of the Florida Park Service. “We welcome the Florida Disabled Outdoors Association to Paynes Prairie Preserve to offer these fun activities.”
“Secondary health issues arise from a sedentary lifestyle. Adults with disabilities are 3 times more likely to have heart disease, stroke, diabetes, or cancer than adults without disabilities. For this reason, SportsAbility lets people try different ways to get active to be healthier, happier and more productive,” stated David Jones, FDOA President.
Community support and sponsors makes SportsAbility possible and improves people’s lives. The City of Ocala, Florida State Parks, Florida Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program, Disabled Sports USA, Mobility Ventures LLC and Sysco Foods are proud sponsors of SportsAbility Ocala. Everyone is invited to come out and experience Active Leisure for Life!
