Using New/Social Media for Cancer Control and Prevention Part II

January 21st, 2014 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

In early summer, the NCI Research to Reality Program issued a call for abstract inviting community members to share their experiences using new and social media tools in innovative and effective ways.  The response was robust and we are delighted to present the second of a two-part series on Using New/Social Media for Cancer Control & Prevention Interventions.
Haley Justice-Gardiner from the LIVESTRONG Foundation will discuss a campaign launched to increase awareness and utilization of our bilingual resources for Hispanic/Latino cancer survivors and their loved ones, in response to U.S. Census Bureau data finding the Hispanic/Latino population to be the largest and fastest growing minority population. With the rapid increase in internet and social media usage among the Hispanic/Latino audience, viral outreach strategies were created that utilized our existing Facebook and Twitter accounts to connect with bilingual Hispanic/Latinos affected by cancer.

In her presentation, Amy R. Allen from the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center (MBRCC) will share the expanded efforts of the Bonnie’s Bus mobile mammography program at the West Virginia University MBRCC that extended beyond traditional outreach modalities to create an adaptive digital media campaign to expand awareness of the Bonnie’s Bus program and the need for breast cancer screening. In response to the success of the Bonnie’s Bus initiative online, other Cancer Prevention and Control programs at MBRCC are now on Facebook including the Appalachia Community Cancer Network and the WV Mountains of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Coalition.

Lastly, Kevin Linn will discuss how the Canadian Cancer Society used a lay-health promoter model in conjunction with social media, including a website, Facebook page, video clips, online news articles, and newsletters to facilitate health conversations with existing LBGTQ online groups and networks. The program was first, successfully implemented in Northern, First Nation, and South Asian communities and subsequently adapted for LGBTQ audiences; by collaborating via social media within well-established online communities the CCS is able to promote participation in cancer screenings in under/never served communities.

Justice-Gardiner, Allen, and Linn will share their perspectives on the best uses of social and new media and how they utilized lower resource cost social media, like Facebook or YouTube, for addressing the cancer needs of hard to reach populations. The final part of the webinar will be dedicated to Q&A and discussion and will offer an opportunity to engage with the presenters, and also to share your own experiences and thoughts.

Webinar on the Affordable Care Act's Impact on Cancer: What's Ahead in 2014

December 18, 2013 Noon EST

As part of the GW Cancer Institute’s technical support for Comprehensive Cancer Control programs and health care professionals, its Center for the Advancement of Cancer Survivorship and Navigation (caSNP) provides free monthly webinars on relevant trends, tools and resources. Signed into law into law in 2010, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) is the most extensive health care system reform in decades in the United States. With the goals of increasing access, improving quality and reducing costs, uncertainty exists regarding the ACA’s effect on cancer care. This webinar will highlight the ACA’s impact on cancer care for providers and patients, including challenges and successes. It will also look ahead to 2014 and how the remaining roll-out of the legislation will affect the cancer community. Register here!

FEATURED SPEAKER: Dr. Irene Estores
Dr. Irene M. Estores completed her Integrative Medicine fellowship at the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine, the nationally recognized program of Dr. Andrew Weil, as a Bravewell Fellow. She is also a specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM and R) and completed her residency training at the Sinai Hospital- Johns Hopkins Hospital Inter-institutional program in PM and R. She received her initial acupuncture training at the University of Miami Center for Complementary and Integrative Medicine and has applied this to the management of both musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain. She has worked as clinical faculty in academic medical centers, in federal hospital systems, and in a community outreach clinic prior to her current position as Medical Director of the Integrative Medicine Program at the University of Florida Health System.
Irene's interest in integrative medicine grew out of self-exploration of other healing and belief systems, the deepening of her spiritual practice of prayer, self-reflection and meditation, and a mindful experience of both the good and bad things that have happened in her life as an individual and as a physician. She considers her practice of medicine as a vocation and a spiritual path.

Research to Reality Cyber Seminar: Using New/Social Media for Cancer Control and Prevention

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 19th, 2013, 2:00 – 3:00 PM EST

In early summer, the NCI Research to Reality Program issued a call for abstract inviting community members to share their experiences using new and social media tools in innovative and effective ways.  The response was robust and we are delighted to present the first in a two-part series on Using New/Social Media for Cancer Control & Prevention Interventions.
The use of applications (apps) to deliver evidence-based messages and interventions will be illustrated through the AYA Healthy Survivorship app. Deborah Vollmer Dahlke designed this iOS application for adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors (ages 15-39), to assess their health habits using a theory-based interactive tool that includes a BMI calculator. The assessment gives survivors individual scores for lifestyle, physical activity, nutrition and well-being.

In her presentation, Dr. Versie Johnson-Mallard of the University of South Florida, will demonstrate how the virtual environment Second Life (SL) was used as an educational intervention to increase the knowledge of HPV.  Dr Johnson-Mallard will discuss the efficacy of SL as an educational intervention in improving knowledge of HPV a virus linked to causing cervical cancer.

Vollmer Dahlke and Johnson-Mallard will share their perspectives on the best uses of social and new media and how they addressed key issues of cost, dissemination, and sustainability.  The final part of the webinar will be dedicated to Q&A and discussion and will offer an opportunity to engage with the presenters, and also to share your own experiences and thoughts.

The Truth About Tanning Webinar

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2013 1:30-3:00 PM EST

Join us for an interactive webinar to learn about the risks of indoor tanning and the Minnesota UVideo challenge for high school students
Skin cancer is increasing in all age groups, including young people. Melanoma is the most serious, and at times deadly, form of skin cancer. For the last 15 years, the number of white women ages 20-49 years old diagnosed with melanoma has increased 5% each year. Tanning outdoors and in tanning beds is popular among high school students. In fact, 31% of white female high school students in the Midwest have used an indoor tanning device at least once in the past twelve months. This is very risky behavior – indoor tanning before age 35 increases our risk of melanoma 59%. In addition, risk of melanoma increases about 2% per session of indoor tanning use.

SPEAKERS:

  • Professor DeAnn Lazovich, University of Minnesota, School of Public Health
  • Michelle Strangis, Cancer Policy Coordinator, Minnesota Department of Health
  • Learn about tanning bed use, particularly among teens and young adults, as well as current state law on minors' use of tanning beds;
  • Understand the risks associated with use of tanning beds, particularly for teens and young adults;
  • Learn about reforms in other states to protect minors; and
  • Learn about the UVideo Challenge for high school students
and how your school or organization can participate.

OBJECTIVES:

Cancer Connections Cookbook

The upcoming Cancer Connections cookbook, entitled Cooking with Love, is all about providing healthful recipes using delicious ingredients.  The idea is to not only make healthful cooking and eating a means for improving the health of cancer patients, survivors and their caregivers....but for making it FUN, too!  Most of the recipes come directly from the monthly Cancer Connections luncheons, with a few contributed from other local cooks.  There are even a few "not so healthful" recipes thrown in for good measure, for those days when we all need some real comfort food.

The cookbooks sell for $14, and can be shipped to family members and friends for $3 per book.  We can accept cash, check or money order, only.

ALL proceeds of the cookbooks will go to the therapy-resistant breast cancer research fund at UF Health's Cancer Center.

They will make great gifts, so order early!

Rays of Hope 2013: Media and the Cancer Experience

September 26, 2013
The Newseum in Washington, DC
6 p.m. Reception, 7 p.m. Program

Join NCCS this fall as we host a conversation about the influence of the media on the cancer experience. Panelists will discuss the role of the media in shaping perceptions of cancer treatment, access and quality. The media have a profound impact on public and patient attitudes toward a cancer diagnosis and treatment, and media coverage of cancer can also affect public policy debates about cancer care. Media from all disciplines are transforming how cancer patients and their families receive information about their disease, navigate difficult choices about treatment, and make decisions about their lives after cancer.

Words Matter. More than a quarter century ago, the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship embarked on a mission to change the vocabulary of cancer.

NCCS sought to replace “cancer victim” with “cancer survivor,” a change in terminology that helped bring about a dramatically different notion of the cancer experience. NCCS has built upon this history and is now working to ensure that from the moment of diagnosis through treatment and beyond, improving the quality of cancer care for survivors is a national policy priority. Patient Advocate Foundation Launches Financial Assistance Program for Patients Battling Prostate Cancer

-- LIVESTRONG Foundation and Movember Grant Funding to Help Cover Expenses
Associated with Radiation Therapy --

Hampton, VA.  As of August 15th, prostate cancer patients now have access to financial support in the form of $1,000 grants that contribute towards the co-pay expenses associated with prescribed radiation therapy during treatment. Nationally recognized case management organization Patient Advocate Foundation (PAF) has partnered with Movember and the LIVESTRONGFoundation to launch the Radiation Co-Payment Small Grant Financial Aid Fund, ensuring prostate cancer patients across the nation have access to monetary support that can bring needed relief to their budget.

Eligible men include those who have been diagnosed and are in active radiation treatment for prostate cancer with an annual income of $60,000 or less. Qualified patients may use the one-time grant of $1,000 to cover their out-of-pocket expenses associated with radiation therapy, helping to reduce the financial burden associated with treatment. On average, Medicare patients receiving up to nine weeks of radiation treatments have an out-of-pocket responsibility ranging from $1,054 to over $3,300, depending on the specific radiation treatment prescribed.   Patients who receive proton beam therapy radiation treatments can see almost double that amount in out-of-pocket costs allowed within their 20% copayment.

Patient Advocate Foundation’s professional staff is available to assist applicants and distribute funds through the toll-free financial assistance line at (855) 824-7941.  Live financial counselors are available Monday – Thursday 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. and Friday 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. Eastern time to assist patients through the grant application process.

Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in the U.S., affecting one in six men. One new case occurs every 2.2 minutes and a man dies from prostate cancer every 17.5 minutes.

Movember and the LIVESTRONG Foundation have provided generous support to Patient Advocate Foundation to launch this financial aid program, allowing men and their families greater monetary support while involved in treatment and recovery.

Movember is the global men’s health charity that encourages men across the world to sprout a mustache during the month of November to raise vital awareness and funds for men's health issues to combat prostate and testicular cancer and mental health challenges.

"Movember is honored to partner with PAF and the LIVESTRONG Foundation to assist men undergoing prostate cancer treatment, “said Mark Hedstrom, Director of Movember U.S. “This financial aid will provide men and their families monetary support while undergoing treatment and throughout the recovery process.”

“The LIVESTRONG Foundation is grateful to partner with the Patient Advocate Foundation and Movember on this program to reduce the financial burden on men facing prostate cancer,” said Doug Ulman, Foundation President and CEO.  “We believe access to affordable, timely and quality health care is a human right and want to do our part to make this possible for anyone affected by cancer.”

PAF, one of the nation’s leading nonprofit patient assistance programs, will direct the contribution toward helping males in treatment for prostate cancer, regardless of insurance status.

“For years PAF has identified the barrier to treatment that is created by the direct expense associated with potentially life- saving radiation therapies. As a result of this gift from Movember and the LIVESTRONG Foundation, we can now provide relief for those who need it most,” said Beth Patterson, President, Mission Delivery for PAF.

Cyber-Seminar - Implementation and Implications: The Impact of the Affordable Care Act on Cancer Control

Tuesday, September 17th, 2013, 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. ET

It has been three years since the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was signed into law. Most of the provisions will have been implemented by the start of 2014. The September National Cancer Institute (NCI) Research to Reality cyber-seminar will explore the major provisions of the ACA and Medicaid changes and their implications for cancer control. We will also examine how cancer control coalitions and organizations are addressing these changes.

Carter Steger from the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network will join us to share an overview of the ACA implementation and the changes to Medicaid and the specific impacts on cancer control.

Dr. Jennifer Redmond from the University of Kentucky will then share an example of how her state coalition has been working with multiple government offices and organizations to implement ACA and its impact on screening and prevention. She will share her perspective on the progress made and the lessons learned in Kentucky as well as those of her colleagues in other states.

Ms. Steger and Dr. Redmond will share their perspectives on the impact of the ACA and how state and local coalitions can align the priorities and efforts to seize the opportunities and address the issues that stem from the ACA.

The final part of the webinar will be dedicated to Q&A and discussion and will offer an opportunity to engage with the presenters, and also to share your own experiences and thoughts.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the cyber-seminar, participants will be able to:
  • Identify how the implementation of major provisions of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) impact cancer control
  • Identify areas of the ACA that relate to CCC coalition plans
  • Consider the implications of the ACA and in which ways your coalition’s priorities and advocacy efforts could be aligned to seize opportunities stemming from ACA.
